Abstract

The assessment of clay deposits in Reservoir Hadejia Local Government Area of Jigawa State for use as refractory materials has been carried out. Clay samples were mined from three different locations in reservoir Hadejia local Government. Hadejia local Government is blessed with abundant deposits of clay, which is mostly used for the production of potteries, mud houses and structures. Samples of clays were collected from three different locations Namely A, B and C. The samples were prepared by standard methods. The chemical properties of the samples were tested to assess their suitability for refractoriness. Silica, Aluminum and Iron are the most influencing elements in terms of Refractoriness. The percentage of The Silica Oxide was found to be 54.00% for samples A B and C. Alumina Oxides was found to be 17.40%. Iron Oxide contents in the samples were found to be: 5.53%, in Reservoir Hadejia local Government area of Jigawa State. The refractoriness values were found to be 1400OC for Reservoir. These materials were found to be more of Kaolinite and bentonite, because of their fusion point, (1300OC -1400 OC) which is suitable for cast iron and non-ferrous works. Hence from the results obtained all the samples from each location could be used for Crucibles furnace, Induction furnace and lining furnace of a medium temperature application due to low alumina content.
